Enviros secures lead environmental consultant role for groundbreaking Clean Coal/Carbon Capture project in Scotland
Enviros has successfully secured the role of lead environmental consultant for a groundbreaking £2bn power station in Ayrshire that has the potential to provide enough electricity to meet the average needs of up to 2 million homes.
As part of the process of acquiring planning permission Enviros have been commissioned by Eunomia (Ayrshire Power's Project Managers) to manage the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), whilst working in conjunction with a number of other consultancies including EnviroCentre and RMJM Architects amongst others. In addition Enviros will provide the clients, Dong Energy and Peel Energy, with advice on planning and environmental issues.
The development proposals include the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology at the earliest opportunity. This technology has been promoted as the method by which coal power stations can operate without resulting in large emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. CCS involves collecting, transporting and then storing the CO2 in natural underground cavities to prevent it escaping into the atmosphere. Studies have indicated that up to 90% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted can be effectively captured and stored in this manner. This technology is already being successfully tested in continental Europe and the US. The UK is a leader in driving forward the deployment of CCS technicality and the International Energy Agency (IEA) suggests that CCS technologies could contribute up to 28% of global CO2 mitigation by 2050.
