Environmental regulation essential for economic recovery
The Aldersgate Group is calling for a rapid transition to a greener economy in a bid to steer the UK towards economic recovery.
The group's latest report, entitled Green Foundations 2009 was launched on the 4th December 2008 at the House of Commons. Green Foundations 2009 argues that rather than threatening the future of environmental policy, the current financial crisis actually reinforces the need for a rapid move towards a low carbon, resource efficient economy.
Enviros Strategy Director and Chairman of the Aldersgate Group, Peter Young, said: "Far from being an indulgence that would damage competitiveness, the low carbon economy is an essential component of the economic recovery. The government must grasp this unique opportunity to reform unsustainable business practices, boost competitiveness and stimulate green jobs and wealth."
To mark the report's launch, the Aldersgate Group is hosting a reception at the House of Commons Dining Room today, 4 December to discuss the importance of maintaining high environmental standards during the current economic downturn.
Speakers include:
Mike O Brien - Energy Minister
Lord Smith - Chairman, Environment Agency
Mark Clare - Chief Executive, Barratt Developments
