Enviros grows energy work in Canada
Higher energy costs in addition to pressure from media, Government and consumers has seen Canadian companies increasingly looking to become more energy efficient in their operations. Enviros is working with several businesses in Canada on reducing energy consumption and has implemented the Enviros enManage programme at many organisations.
enManage is the Enviros' energy management programme which encompasses all aspects of business operations, involving People, Systems and Technology, and results in significant cost savings, process improvements and compliance with regulatory requirements.
enManage is a continuous improvement process which has particular emphasis on no/low cost savings. Utility Cost savings of up to 15% on industrial sites and up to 25% in commercial facilities, can be achieved through implementation of enManage. Business risks associated with emissions and other environmental impacts are not just contained, but are turned to competitive advantage.
Enviros are currently actively involved in nine industrial programmes in Canada, supporting Canadian industrial companies to achieve energy savings and improvements in their energy monitoring.
Recent projects in Canada include an enManage scoping study with 3M at a plant manufacturing masking tape. This has led to a full enManage programme. The primary driver for the enManage programme is to reduce costs and to make the energy performance visible.
We have also recently been commissioned by Lakeside Steel Corp, a steel mill producing piping, to carry out an enManage scoping study. The steel industry in Canada and internationally is under intense cost pressures and one of the largest controllable costs is that for energy. The scoping study provides a detailed investigation of energy saving opportunities, assesses Monitoring and Targeting savings potential and the projected benefits of an EMIS
We also recently completed the first 2 years of a 3 year enManage programme for Ivaco Rolling Mills, a steel rolling mill producing rod for automotive and engineering applications. The plant employs over 500 staff and has a total utility spend of approximately £34.5 million. The work for Ivaco started with an enManage energy management scoping study which identified utility saving opportunities of CAN$759,000 from implementation of an energy management programme. A further saving of CAN$614,000 was identified through the implementation of discrete projects. Following the study a full enManage programme was put into place in October 2006 and resulted in savings of CAN$1.2 million achieved in 2007 and a further CAN$1 million savings targeted for 2008.
To help with the costs of implementation in Ontario and to encourage achievements of savings incentive payments have been provided by Enbridge Gas Distribution.
