Waste producer audits now required by healthcare sector

The Environment Agency in England and Wales has recently produced new guidance for the healthcare waste sector. This guidance introduces a new requirement for producers of healthcare wastes - a pre-acceptance audit of producersÂ’ premises - which must now be carried out on a regular basis.

Healthcare waste producers include NHS premises such as GP surgeries, clinics and hospitals, vets, care homes and some laboratories.

The purpose of the audit is to determine how compliant the producer is with the segregation guidance within HTM 07-01 'Safe Management of Healthcare Waste'. Where a site is not compliant, the waste contractor may refuse to accept the waste.

As editors of HTM 07-01, Enviros has a good understanding of its waste segregation requirements and we have extensive experience of waste audits in the healthcare sector. Enviros is currently working with a number of healthcare clients undertaking pre-acceptance audits.

If you have any clients that may require a waste producer audit and require further details of our service or experience in this sector, please contact us.
