The impact of the new Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) on waste management operations
The introduction of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) over the next 9 to 18 months will trigger a need for a number of waste management facilities to apply for, and obtain, new Environmental Permits to continue operations lawfully.
This is likely to be the biggest shake up of the permitting process in the UK since the introduction of Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) between 1999 and 2005. Existing sites which will now fall within the requirements of the Directive are likely to include transfer stations, Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plants, Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) reprocessing plants and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities.
The sites will need to demonstrate the application of Best Available Techniques in their processes, appropriate and potentially enhanced management systems and increased regulatory reporting.
